Ray travelled to London for a day of reference photography, exploring the city streets and documenting details that drew his attention. This painting is based on a photograph taken on Berwick Street, where a designated motorcycle bay features heavy-duty security rings embedded into the road surface, used by riders to chain and secure their bikes. Titled Road to Insecurity, the work reflects a sense of tension, as the damaged locking ring appears close to being torn from the ground, undermining its intended purpose.
Ray chose this subject to challenge himself technically, focusing on achieving a high level of realism in a metallic form. Particular attention was given to the contrast between the sharp, grimy detail of the foreground and the soft, blurred depth of the receding background, emphasizing both material texture and spatial depth.
